The work of Walter Chappell was published as early as the late 50's and in a 1960 collaboration, UNDER THE SUN, with Nathan Lyons and Syl Labrot, the three "working in a singular realm of camera vision." Soon after in 1963, Walter spearheaded and exhibited with the ASSOCIATION OF HELIOGRAPHERS, a visionary group of photographers that included founding members Paul Caponigro, William Clift, Marie Cosindas, et al. His photographs have since appeared in many exhibition catalogues, books, magazines, CD jackets, pamphlets, calendars, greeting cards, foldouts, and other printed media. His most recent exhibition was curated by Shems Friedlander at the American University in Cairo.

These audio recordings represent a small portion of an interview conducted by ROBIN CHAPPELL with Walter Chappell at his home in El Rito, New Mexico in 1995.

Walter recounts meeting up with MINOR WHITE in San Francisco after years had passed since they were first acquainted. When Walter was 16 years old, he had met Minor during a skiing expedition in Mount Saint Helens. Upon re-establishing their relationship, Walter becomes interested in "a much more mature way about photography."
Walter discusses his first interests in GURDJIEFF and his visit to Louise March in New York state to study his teachings. "I began really studying that book," All And Everything.
Walter describes building TESLA coils with his brother Stanley Chappell in the basement of their Portland home as adolescents. These experimentations will inform later work on his Metaflora series.
Walter describes his understanding of sound and light as it relates to his metaphysical philosophies. "Sound is just as mysterious as light..."
